Louis “Satchmo” Armstrong August 4, 1901 - July 6, 1971 Birthplace: New Orleans, Louisiana As a young child, he borrowed five dollars from his employer, a local Jewish family, in order to purchase his first horn. He didn’t began playing the trumpet until 1926.
He found his voice and expanded his talent by playing all
over New Orleans, mainly in Storyville, its red light district. His influence reached the furthest corners of the globe. During the Cold War, Armstrong, then known as “Ambassador Satch”, traveled throughout Africa to Congo, in which a one-day truce was called just to watch him play. He was the
Heartbeat of Jazz.
